Hey There! I’m Glad
You’re Here!
Welcome to Gilly’s Sweets and Treats! I’m Keryn aka Gilly. Gilly’s
is located in the lovely Windy City in an apartment tucked in Lincoln Park. I
am currently a soon to be graduating student from DePaul University. Here at Gilly’s
I have one simple rule: always eat dessert.
Frequently Asked
Questions
Who is Gilly? I’m Gilly. It’s
pronounced like the SNL skit with Kristen Wiig but no, that’s not the origin.
Since I was a kid, I have had a plethora of nicknames designed by my mother.
These include: kedda-pasha, padded-patches, and gi-gi-gill. Needless to say,
Gilly kind of starting become my official nickname in high school among my
group of friends. My closest friends rarely call me Keryn, it’s always Gill or
Gilly! Personally, I think the name Gilly is the perfect representation of
baking, as the name is fun and so is baking!
How Did You Learn to
Bake?
I have always had a knack for food. I always reference the first time I learned
to make scrambled eggs with my dad at age 12. I always wanted to learn about
food, because I loved eating it! I have always loved sugar and around age 15 I
started occasionally playing around with box-mixes. Usually though my mom and I
would eat up all the batter before the mix made it into the oven…woops.
Recently, I found a video of my sister Brittany and I as little
nuggets baking cookies. Can I just say when I saw the video I teared up. If
only I could tell that little Gilly that this fun you’re having at 2 will be
something you do for a job…ah!
Long story short, I learned how to bake from mixes and from
YouTube! That’s right, I would and still watch endless videos on piping
tutorials, Julia Child recipes, frosting techniques, etc. I am a visual learner
and having YouTube has been a godsend.
What’s Your Favorite
Thing to Bake? I would say cake bites or a skillet cookie. If you ask anyone
from Canton High School from 2010-2011 about me, I think (hopefully) they would
say that I always had a tupperware full of cake bites with me. Cake bites (aka
cake pops) are really fun to make, but to me the best kind are the simple ones
dipped in dark chocolate…YUM!
Who Was Your First
Customer? No one asks me this, I just like to give a special shout-out to
my first customer ever, Perry. Thanks Perry, that red velvet Bundt cake started
an innovation.
Instead of answering individual questions, here’s a quick about me:
- Age: 22
- Originally from a suburb outside Boston, MA, currently living in Chicago, IL
- I really enjoy my older sister Brittany and the last time she saw this bullet here she laughed. So that’s why I’m leaving it
- I have a deeply rooted obsession with The Wizard of Oz. I will often quote it daily and mimic munchkin voices…it’s weird
- One of my roommates is a dog named Willow, and I really like him
- I have two tattoos and want one of a whisk. I ruled out a chocolate chip, sadly
- I am a huge sucker for any season or episode of The Real Housewives, I think its quality television.
- I also share the same obsession with American Horror Story: Jessica Lange is my queen
- On the subject of obsessions, my favorite band ever is Fleetwood Mac and their music is on my baking playlist
- I think food bakes better with music playing
- I am really really humbled by the constant support I receive by my family and friends
